ON TYPHOID SITUATION IN THE URBAN AREA

Abstract
A survey was conducted by the author from 1 July through 31 July 1936, on the typhoid situation of Taejon City, Chungchongnam Do, and a cross check was made with the records of Taejon provincial hospital and Taejon city health center. The survey dirscted to a total of 53 past cases who had got typhoid fever during the period from 1 January 1965 to 20 June 1966 residing in 30 households of 13 Dongs led to the following findings.
1. Of all 53 cases surveyed, the number of female was 28 and that of cases aged 10~19 was 24.
2. There were the most cases in September with more cases in the months of June~October, but some case did occur through the year.
3. Of all the cases surveyed, there were 2 cases whose occupation was food handler and 2 cases one ¢¥of whose family was food handler.
4. The majority of they cases were located in the area along the two creeks which flow across the city :and were heavily polluted.
5. The case fatality rate was 3. 77%.
6. Among the total, reported and unreported cases constituted 62. 3% and 37. 7% respectively.
7. Of all the cases reported, 42. 5% were done by Dong/Ban official. 27. 3% by the provincial hospital.
8. Of all unreported cases, 55. 0% were treated at home with the drugs from drug stores.
9. Of all the cases surveyed, 32.1% were treated only at the provincial hospital. And if the frequency distribution is allocated among all the single sources of treatment, the cases related to the provincial hospital were 45.8%, those to durg stores 27.8%, and those to private clinics 18.1%.
10. About 50% of all reported cases were isolated in the hospital within 2 weeks after the onset.
11. About 70% of all isolated cases stayed at the hospital for less than 3 weeks.
12. Of all the cases surveyed, primary, secondary and uncertain cases constituted 52.8%, 43.4% and 3.8% respectively.
13. Of all secondary cases, 52.2% did occur 4~7 weeks after the onset of the primary case.
14. There were 20 households with only 1 case and 10 households with 2 or more cases.
15. About 23% of typhoid case households used city water supply system, while about 67% of all the households in Taejon City consumed it.
16. More than 55% of all the cases were not immunized before sickness.
17. Apparently, there was no follow-up examination of the cases after they were discharged from the hospital nor anything done about the contacts.
18. A total of 21 stool specimens were taken from some of the past cases and their contacts, and 1 contact was found to be a carrier.
